Our last Singer Spotlight of 2017: Edward "Siggy" Hinderer!
The final spotlight in our Singer Spotlight series is on Edward "Siggy" Hinderer. Siggy has been singing with SACC for two seasons and we are glad to welcome him back for our The Mystery of Christmas concert this weekend!
Tell us about yourself, Siggy!
I was born in Albuquerque, NM, was raised in Austin, TX, and currently live in San Antonio. I studied Choral Education at The University of Texas at Austin and while there, performed with the UT Austin Chamber Choir, Concert Chorale, and Men’s Chorus. I've also sung with Conspirare
Symphonic Choir and Amphion Youth Choir and I'm now serving as choir director at Rudder Middle School in Northside ISD.
What's your favorite choral piece to sing or the most influential piece to you?
Bogoroditse Devo by Rachmaninoff. It was the first piece to really speak to me as a freshman in high school
Who is your composer crush?
Gerald Finzi because his atypical rhythmic and harmonic structures show just how effectively and
deliberately he was able to combine influences from Bach to Holst to his contemporaries like Vaughn Williams into his own personal musical language. Finzi is an unrivaled master at painting vivid textual images with his music. Though his output is minuscule compared to many of his better known contemporaries, Finzi’s large choral masterpieces easily stand eye to eye with the most well-worn Vaughn Williams or Britten works. Personally, I believe the Amen section at the end of his Lo, the Full, Final Sacrifice is one of the 5 or 10 most satisfying passages of music to hear when performed well.
What's your fondest musical memory?
Riding the bus to Region Auditions and Festivals with choir fam in high school!
What's your proudest musical moment?
Performing as an invited TMEA Honor Choir with the UT Austin Chamber Singers
What's your favorite guilty musical pleasure?
Radiohead. It's not really a guilty pleasure--I just really want people to know how great Radiohead is.
What's your favorite holiday carol?
Es ist ein Ros entsprungen (Lo, How A Rose E’er Blooming) – Praetorius
What's your favorite musical tradition?
Christmas Caroling!
Are there any composers everyone seems to love but you can't stand?
John Rutter, especially the majority of his schmaltzy Christmas stuff. Taylor Swift, especially everything off of every album she’s ever released. See also: the entire Country music genre
If you could be any other vocal part, which would you be?
Alto, because altos take nothing from anybody (and are the best sight readers too!)
What's your dream venue to perform at?
Any of the great European cathedrals
Do you have any other passions or hidden talents?
I’m a diehard Spurs basketball fan; when I’m not singing, I’m on a basketball court practicing my
jump shot
